Olli Kiuru joined Heinola at the start of the year of 2023. He’s lived in Heinola all his life and joined a team skilled in spare part sales. But let’s let Olli himself tell more.
“I’m from Heinola, where I’ve spent all the 25 years of my life. I graduated from Lahti University of Applied Sciences as a wood technology engineer in 2022. I had other options, but wood technology was number one from the very start. And when after graduation, I was offered a job here in Heinola, I didn’t hesitate. It was great to get a job that matched my education right from the start.
I’ve been out and about in the forest my whole life and it’s dear to my heart. During my student years, I worked in plywood mills in Jyväskylä and Savonlinna, and one summer at Versowood’s sawmill. I started here at Heinola in January and sell spare parts on the Heinola Service side.
Comprehensive job description
There are four of us in the spare parts sales team. With just under a year’s experience behind me, I can already say that my job is really comprehensive and fascinating. The job requires an understanding of how sawmill machinery works and its structure so that I can help customers to choose suitable spare parts for their need. The job naturally includes a lot of customer meetings and so good communication and customer service skills are important. You need to be able to listen to the customer’s needs and provide solutions to their problems. You also need to understand customer needs from the economic perspective and you need to be able to offer them financially sound solutions.
The job combines technical competence, customer service, the commercial aspect and continuous learning.
“Since sawmill machinery technology is constantly developing, people working in the sector need to keep abreast of the latest trends and technologies. At the same time, we need to go through the archives to dig out things we have delivered to our customers decades ago. The scale is broad, which is what makes the job very interesting. My job combines technical competence, customer service, the commercial aspect and continuous learning.”
Focus on the forest and great outdoors in free time, too
“My free-time bobbies include hunting, golf and being outdoors with the dogs. This means the forest and nature is present otherwise than through my job. Besides this, I play floorball and other ball games.
