Heinolan Sahakoneet receives kiln order from Metsä Fibre

PRESS RELEASE 30.4.2020

Metsä Fibre, part of the Metsä Group, is building the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma. Heinolan Sahakoneet will supply the kilns and related load transfer equipment for the sawmill.

Heinolan Sahakoneet has secured a significant order from Metsä Fibre. Heinola will deliver all the kilns and related load transfer equipment to the new sawmill being established in Rauma. The fully automated kiln system to be delivered includes high-quality drying technology as a turnkey solution.

The sawmill being constructed will be a world leader in terms of technology and efficiency. For example, the use of machine vision and artificial intelligence in various stages of the sawing process is a significant innovation, with no comparable technology currently in use in the sawmill industry elsewhere. The Rauma sawmill will focus on demanding end products, and quality will be ensured by high-quality drying technology. The kiln equipment and all load transfers in the kiln area will be fully automated.

Heinola Focuses on kiln business

The duration of the project for Heinolan Sahakoneet is approximately 2.5 years. The kiln project will significantly employ domestic companies in the industry. The domestic labor share of the kiln project corresponds to 100 person-years. The domestic content of the sawmill construction is also high, around 70 percent, and the construction phase will employ 1,500 people.

“This order is extremely significant for us and provides work for our own Heinola unit as well. The delivery is also strongly aligned with our new strategy. We are increasingly focusing on the kiln business and the development of drying technology,” says Jan Räsänen, CEO of Heinolan Sahakoneet.

The value of the equipment deliveries to the Rauma sawmill is approximately 100 million euros. The total investment is around 200 million euros, and the new unit’s annual production will be approximately 750,000 cubic meters of sawn pine timber.

Heinolan Sahakoneet is a company based in Heinola, operating since 1969, specializing in the design, implementation, and maintenance of sawmill kilns. In addition to the kiln business, the company’s operations include chippers and the Heinola Service maintenance business. In 2019, the company’s turnover was 12 million euros.
